ROBERT BLACKBURN (1913 - 2003)
Heavy Forms (Pink).

Color lithograph, 1962. 404x500 mm; 16x19 3/4 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Artist's proof, printed in different colors, aside from the 1962 edition of approximately 10-12. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin.

A very good, richly-inked scarce proof of this very scarce and significant print. According to Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn's Printmaking Workshop, from 1958 to 1961, Blackburn worked on several variations of the lithograph Heavy Forms. The abstracted imagery derives from Blackburn's earlier tabletop still lifes. Here the image aligns the "tabletop" to the printed surface, tipping it up to mimic the inked edge of the lithographic stone and the print process itself. Blackburn treated the stone with tremendous fluidity, re-orienting the image and frequently signing his work on both top and bottom margins, allowing options for viewing.
