Additional Details

This carta was issued in response to a request from Juan García de Mercado, owner of a hacienda in Texcoco, to have access to the repartimiento, the system of forced labor involving local Indians. The carta notes that other haciendas in the area made use of repartimiento Indians, which attests to the pervasiveness of the system.
