Silver print, the image measuring 9 1/2x7 1/2 inches (24.1x19.1 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, the mount 14x11 inches (35.6x27.9 cm.), with the notation 895 - ONE MATISSE, in the negative, and with Steichen's 80 West 40th Street and copyright hand stamp and a later title, date, and numeric notation, in pencil, in an unknown hand, on mount verso. 1930
Steichen, who was Alfred Stieglitz's cultural emissary in Europe, arranged to have Matisse's work shown for the first time in the U.S. at Gallery 291, in 1908.
