GUNTHER GERZSO
Semblanza.

Color etching, 1993. 440x305 mm; 17 1/4x12 inches, full margins. Artist's proof. Signed, dated, titled and inscribed "P.A. II/V" in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque. A very good impression.

Ex-collection Andrew Gerzso, the son of the artist.

Gerzso (1915-2000) was born in Mexico City and worked from the 1930s onward in theatre and film principally as a set designer (toward the end of his career, he collaborated with John Huston in Under the Volcano, 1984). Gerszo started painting in the late 1930s and printmaking thereafter. He had lived with his wealthy uncle Dr. Hans Wendland in Lugano, Switzerland during his teens, and was inspired by his uncle's collection of old master and modern paintings. He was notably infleunced by Paul Klee, whom he had met through his uncle in Switzerland during his stay with his uncle.
