"Mr. Tootwhistle's Invention." Together, a nearly complete set of twenty-four preliminary drawings and eight final, full-color drawings for "Mr. Tootwhistle's Invention" by Wells (Philadelphia: The John C. Winston Co., 1942). The studies are ink and red ballpoint pen on thin board; the finished drawings are watercolor and ink on paper. Image sizes are approximately 241x191 mm; 9 1/2x7 1/2 inches with the exception of the cover and rear mock up which measures 254x381 mm; 10x15 inches. Copious artist's notes in margins. Uniformly matted.

Additional Details

"Mr. Tootwhistle's Invention" is humorously based on the history of the Camden & Amboy Railroad and won first prize in the 1942 New York Herald Tribune's Children's Spring Book Festival.
