Bridgman (1857-1928) was born in Alabama and worked as a draughtsman in New York before moving to Paris in 1866 where, the following year, he entered the studio of the celebrated academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904). Through Gérôme's influence and several trips to North Africa during the late 1800s, Bridgman became one of the leading Orientalist artists of the day, even becoming known as "The American Gérôme."

This is an Algerian scene made by Bridgman after one of his travels to North Africa.
