Higgins (1884-1949) was born in Shelbyville, Indiana, and left home at the age of 15 to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Carter Harrison, the mayor of Chicago from 1879-87, recognized Higgins' talent and sponsored him to study in Europe for two and a half years where he met fellow American artists Walter Ufer and Martin Hennings. When Harrison subsequently sent him to New Mexico on a painting trip he became greatly influenced by the light and landscape of the West; he eventually settled and joined the Taos Society of Artists, along with Ufer and Hennings. He primarily focused on western landscapes, that drew on Cubism with their multi-point perspectives and interlocking planes.
