Bernstein (1890-2002) was raised in Philadelphia and studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now the Moore College of Art and Design). While in Philadelphia, she joined the "Philadelphia Ten," a group of female artists who participated in exhibitions together both in Philadelphia and also along the East Coast and Midwest. She later moved to New York where she studied at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase and took a studio near Bryant Park where she became interested in depicting the daily life of New Yorkers in the manner of the Ashcan school. She spent her summers at the Gloucester, Massachusetts art colony and produced many coastal scenes such as the current work. Bernstein was married to the artist William Meyerowitz (1893-1981, se lots 113 and 114).
