DESIGNER UNKNOWN LE TRONE D'ECOSSE. 1871.
41 x 30 inches. Van Geylen. Paris.
Condition A-: minor restoration in left margin.
The only reference we could find on Van Geylen was in the French National Archives where he is listed as a printer and publisher between 1815 and 1870. And yet, this poster is as accomplished as (and in many ways quite similar to) any Cheret image from the same period. If history has been unkind to Van Geylen, it has also been unfair to Hervé, the composer of this operetta. Born Florimond Roger (1825-1892) Hervé was the composer of the first French operetta Don Quichotte in 1847. Although he enjoyed tremendous success in his lifetime, he has subsequently been overshadowed by his good friend Jacques Offenbach. This poster is a rare and precious document not only artistically, but also for the history of French operettas.
