BERNI (DATES UNKNOWN) LOUIS D'OR.
49 1/2x37 inches. Bourgerie, Paris.
Condition B+: restoration along vertical and hoizontal folds.
The aperitif Louis d'Or was a potent mix of quinquina and sauterne wine. In an attempt to give it a regal sounding name, and based on its color, Mssr. Dumanoir came up with an obvious choice. After a century and a half of kings all named Louis, France had begun referring to their primary gold coin after their monarch. Taking a dramatic step, the manufacturer applied the name of the coin named after the kings to the drink itself. He then went one step further and assigned Berni to come up with an image that was as accessible as the name itself. In a light, kitschy style, he depicts the drink (and its namesake, the Louis d'Or), and an attractive painter drawing laurel wreaths around a bottle of the liqueur.
