Just as with the upper classes in Paris, where balls were among the highlights of seasonal activities, so too students in the south of France, particularly Bordeaux, Toulouse and Marseille had these yearly events to look forward to. Year after year excellent posters were designed and printed advertising these events. The artists were likely students themselves, and few of their names ever went farther than the single poster they designed. Yet the works they produced were vibrant and remarkable. Here, an energetic pierrot is leading the festivities by banging on his bass drum. The multi-colored background suggests that the artist was familiar with the work of Cheret.
