D'APRES ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [THE SEASONS.] Four panel wooden screen. Circa 1896.
Each screen 65 1/2x106 inches. Images approximately 35 1/4x21 inches.
Condition varies, generally B / B+. Printed on cloth.
The Four Seasons became an incredibly popular series, and the ever eager Champenois was happy to use the images in many different ways, including smaller formats, all four printed on a single sheet, printings on silk, etc. Such was the success of Mucha's concept that designers began to paint the images within the homes of some of their wealthy bourgeois clients and tapestries were turned out mechanically in order to be mounted on screens. These images, which are identical to Mucha's 1896 images, do not bear his signature nor the mark of any printer. This indicates that they were printed without the approval of Champenois, and that might explain why they disappeared quickly from the market. Very few of these cloth images have surfaced, and none that we are aware of that are still mounted to their screens.
