ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) "L'ATLANTIQUE." 1931.
39 1/4x24 1/2 inches, 99 3/4x62 1/4 cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris.
Condition B+: minor restoration along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; streaking in image; minor discoloration along upper left edge; mounted on linen, which is mounted on board.
L'Atlantique is often compared to Cassandre's Normandie (hich he designed 4 years later, in 1935). "Indeed these two posters share a specifically modern approach to the picturesque" (Mouron p. 66). "The composition uses a rectangle in the center of the poster. This gives a strong sense of security and a sense of power to the scene . . . smoke rises from a tugboat and crosses with the smoke from the ship's smokestack so that smoke spirals around the hull of the ship, and the eyes are drawn to the boat" (Cassandre / Suntory p. 90). Mouron 34, Cassandre / Tokyo 45, Cassandre / Suntory 66, Cassandre / Weill p. 49.
