HAYWARD L. OUBRE (1916 - 2006)
Self Portrait.

Etching on cream wove paper, 1948. 404x254mm; 16x10 inches, wide margins. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin. This is a scarce example of the first printing, with rich plate tone, before the later edition of 50 that was printed in 1980.

Another impression is illustrated in Cedric Dover, American Negro Art, p. 55. Four of Oubre's abstract etchings, also created in 1948, are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, part of the donated group of prints by African-American artists from the collection of Reba and Dave Williams.
