Kerry James Marshall was selected to exhibit in the 1999/2000 Carnegie International, the oldest North American exhibition of contemporary art from around the world. Marshall created an installation for the exhibition entitled RYTHM MASTR, in which he covered the glass of the backlit vitrines in the Treasure Room at the Carnegie Museum of Art with these comics. Rythm Mastr is a story of love, revenge, and redemption in the inner city that features African-American superheroes based on traditional African sculpture and stories. The comics were started by Marshall after he realized that, even though African-American children are as interested in comics and superheroes as other children, there had not been a comic strip with independent black superheroes.
