Additional Details

Gillis's chart is quite rare to start, however the considerable manuscript extensions in a near contemporary hand frame this as an extraordinary and unique artifact relating to American interest in the nineteenth century pepper trade. The maker of the supplementary information is unknown, however the Southeast Asian block-printed cloth backing suggests it was created in the region, presumably with the intention of being used aboard a trade vessel.
