ELLÈS (LOUIS SCHIFFER, DATES UNKNOWN) [L'HUILE DE MOTEUR.] Pastel, gouache and collage maquette. 1927. 23 1/2x15 1/2 inches, 59x39 1/2 cm. Condition B+: minor tears, losses and abrasions at top edge; small water spots at lower left margin; scuffing and some flaking in image. Stamped, hand-numbered 113 and dated 24/3/27 in ink on verso. Paper. At the end of the 1970s. a number of unrealized advertising projects surfaced into the market. They were all signed "Ellès" and stamped on the back with "Propriete des Affiches ELLES 131 Rue St. Denis" - an address in a neighborhood where many small lithographers and printers opened shop towards the end of the 19th century. The images were reminiscent of work done by Leonetto Cappiello or Jean d'Ylen, but Louis Schiffer remained an enigma, and no further information has ever turned up. This image is a dynamic composition promoting three different kinds of motor oils.
