An early manuscript copy of a scarce pamphlet describing the 1624 conflict between the Viceroy don Diego Carrillo de Mendoza y Pimentel and the Archbishop of Mexico Juan Pérez de la Serna, and the riots that ensued in support of the Archbishop which led to the former being deposed. Particularly interesting are the comments Ruiz de Cabrera makes about indigenous language and culture (he was a priest conversant in Nahuatl). At one point toward the end of the account, as he describes the uprising, he comments on what the rebellious Indians were shouting, noting that they referred to the viceroy with a word that meant, literally, "king." Also included is a loose anonymous 12-page letter from one scholar to another regarding the manuscript, and a set of notes in a different hand, along with a table of contents. We trace 5 copies of the printed pamphlet in OCLC, and none at auction. The Bancroft Library holds a manuscript by Cabrera which may be another copy, and another manuscript copy was sold at auction in London in 1880.
