This large, abstract painting of a seascape by Merton Simpson is an excellent example of his work towards the end of the Abstract Expressionist movement. His painting displayed a sophisticated aesthetic influenced by the New York School, the modernism of Paris, and his love of improvisation in jazz. Later in 1963, Simpson's paintings became more political with his involvement in the Spiral group, beginning with his subsequent 1964 Confrontation Series.
