Condition B+: repaired tears through top and bottom margins; restoration in margins; restored losses along upper right edge. Mounted on Japan. A wonderful bird's-eye view of the Ile de France pulling into New York harbor. The perspective allows the viewer to see how large this majestic ocean liner is compared to some of New York's skyscrapers, specifically the Barclay-Vesey building, which was completed in 1927, the same year as the vessel's maiden voyage. The building still stands, but is no longer at the water's edge, as a landfill project generated from excavations during the construction of the World Trade Center was used to create Battery Park City. Much as in the previous poster, the dramatic and unexpected color scheme serves to catch the attention of passersby. Sebille was an accomplished maritime artist who created many posters for the French Line. His signature on his works is invariably followed by an anchor, emphasizing his connection to the sea.
