Part of a well-known series of sculpted busts of noted African-Americans. The sculptor Ruth Inge Hardison (1914-2016) was a founder of the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. Included are busts of almanac author Benjamin Banneker physician Charles Richard Drew, who set up the first blood bank during World War Two Arctic explorer Matthew Henson, the first to reach the North Pole.
