LOÏS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998)
Coastal Road (Martha's Vineyard).

Watercolor on thick wove paper, 1954. 480x610 mm; 19x24 inches. Signed in pencil, lower right.

Provenance: private collection, Maryland; private collection (2005).

This charming landscape is a scarce, early example of the artist's painting on Martha's Vineyard. The scene is of the road from Oak Bluffs to Edgartown, just after Hurricane Carol in 1954. The area in the background is called Hart Haven, and the road is either Beach Road or Edgartown Oak Bluffs Road. The island landscape, including its coastline, beaches and docks, was an important subject to Loïs Mailou Jones. She revisited it many times over a 60-year period - as an artist, beginning with her first oil landscapes in the late 1930s, and from her youth through her family's many ties to the area.
