JOHANN VINCENZ CISSARZ (1873-1942) ZU NEUER RENAISSANCE! 1900.
33 1/4x22 inches, 84 1/2x56 cm. Theodor Beyer, Dresden.
Condition B+ / A-: repaired tears, overpainting and restoration in margins.
Cissarz was one of the pioneers of poster art in Germany. Involved in many different aspects of the decorative arts, he was a painter and teacher who worked all over Germany. Von zur Westen, who considered Cissarz "a first-class poster artist," described this image as "a color dream of striking beauty." This piece is an important example of the transition between the prevailing style of Classical painting and the new concept of graphic design. The young man's white robe, in flat colors and no outlining, and the stylized flock of birds at the top, are already presaging a new era in design, which is also the subject of the poster, as the man is drinking to "a new renaissance!" Wember 196 (var), DFP-III 482, Darmstadt 234.
