MUNETSUGU SATOMI (1904-1996) COTE D'AZUR. 1934.
38 1/2x24 inches, 97 3/4x61 cm. Le Novateur, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some into image; creases and abrasions in image and across horizontal fold.
Japanese-born Satomi moved to Paris in 1922, where he studied at the École des Beaux Arts. For a short period of time he worked as an assistant to Cassandre in his studio. This experience, combined with his own strong sense of design, helped him gain commissions in both France and Japan. A powerful, Machine Age image of a train seen from above, emerging from the darkness and rushing towards a bright yellow sunburst en route to the Riviera. Intriguingly, this is one of the very few posters for the Cote d'Azur that does not depict any of the blue sea from which the area derives its name. Riviera 11, Train 279.
