Cambria, California Landscape in Autumn.

Oil on canvas board. 506x604 mm; 19 7/8x23 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto.

Ex-collection private collection, New Jersey.

Smith (1891-1943) was born in Ireland and came to the United States in 1903. He studied in New York with Robert Henri (see lots 27 and 29). Smith is best-known chiefly for his northern California landscape paintings, including Monterey, Carmel and Cambria. From the 1920s onward, he lived in Los Angeles and exhibited at the Wilshire Galleries. When the gallery closed following the stock market crash in 1929, Smith supported himself as an interior designer.
