Sale 2068 Lot 25
(CUBA.) Group of reports relative to a slave-hunting party led by Don Ramon Maria Dominguez of the city of Trinidad. Consists of 8 separate reports, written on 17 pages of various sizes; some foxing and oxidation to the iron-gall ink. Office of the Governor of the city of Trinidad, Cuba, 1847-8
A chilling series of reports by Juan Herrera Davila, the military governor of Trinidad, made to Captain-General Gral in Havana regarding an armed party of vigilantes with dogs. Their quarry was a group of "Negros cimarrones" in the area of Rio Aguacate ("cimarron" means wild, or untamed). In fact, these were slaves who had escaped and were living in caves in the mountains, occasionally stealing food from nearby plantations. The rebels were said to have fought savagely with machetes. The leader of the hunting party is quoted in one of the reports to have fired various shots and taken "orejas"--ears.Price Realized (with Buyer's Premium) $2,990
