Sale 2408 Lot 253
(EDUCATION.) "Colored Graded City School for Nicholasville, Kentucky." Albumen photograph, 4-3/4 x 8 inches, on the original cardstock mount; a couple of closed cracks to the bottom edge of the mount. Kentucky, circa 1900
Estimate $800 - 1,200
An exceptional image of a small, one-room schoolhouse in Kentucky. A sign over the doorway reads "Colored Graded City School Graded 1-3." It was probably placed there for this photo, or perhaps something the photographer added to the negative. A note on Kentucky's early colored schools does mention the Dunbar school in Nicholasville moving into a four room brick structure around 1920. This suggests a much smaller previous school, probably the one pictured here.Price Realized (with Buyer's Premium) $531
