(PHOTOGRAPHY.) The Martyr of Freedom, A. Lincoln, Sixteenth President of the United States. Albumen photograph, 7 1/4 x 5 inches, captioned in image, on original plain mount; minor wear, mount unevenly cropped. New York: Charles Magnus, 1865

For this memorial photographic print, Magnus reproduced a somewhat mysterious early presidential portrait of Lincoln dating from circa March-June 1861. The photographer may have been W.L. Germon; the most famous example was inscribed to Lucy Speed, mother of the president's close friend Joshua Fry Speed. Ostendorf O-55, pages 88-89.
