Sale 2486 Lot 99
(PRINTS--PRESIDENTIAL.) Berg & Porsch; [after Gardner.] Untitled German portrait of Lincoln. Chromolithograph, 17 3/4 x 13 3/4 inches to sight; linen-backed, framed without glass, a bit of light cracking in image area. Berlin, [1861?]
Estimate $1,500 - 2,500
An early European depiction of Lincoln. Alexander Gardner's 24 February 1861 photograph (Ostendorf O-51) was the source image, a favorite of German and French printmakers. The resulting print, though, looks unmistakably and eerily European. We trace no other copies at auction.
