Sale 2512 | Lot 391Estimate: $500 - $750Click Image To Enlarge
Sale 2512 Lot 391
(SATIRE -- MILITARY.) Hinton, William. A New Machine (or Raft) to Cover (or Protect) the Landing of the French on Their Intended Invasion of England. Hand-colored etching on "JWhatman" watermarked wove paper. 11x17 inches sheet size, deckle edges on three sides; folds. London: Wm. Hinton, 1798
Estimate $500 - 750
Hilarious cartoon of a completely impractical and un-seaworthy monstrosity: "This machine is flat; 2,100 feet long, and 1,500 feet broad; has 500 cannon round it, of 36 and 38 pounders; at each end is two wind mills, which turns wheels in the water at every point of the wind to navigate; in the middle is a fort enclosing mortars, perriers, &c. It carries 60,000 men, cavalry, infantry, and artillery". By comparison, modern U.S. aircraft carriers run approximately 1,100 feet in length and while deployed support roughly 6,000 crew and personnel. Only a handful of institutional copies can be located.
