Sepia-toned silver print, the image measuring 8 7/8x7 inches (22.5x17.8 cm.), flush mounted, with Ayres' blind stamp on recto, and his credit, copyright, and the notation Philadelphia, in ink, in a period hand, and various descriptive notations, in pencil, on verso. 1860; printed circa 1900

      This is one of the three photographs taken by Hesler in Springfield, Illinois on June 3, 1860 while Lincoln was campaigning for the presidency. Of the three studies, Lincoln said, "That looks better and expresses me better than any I have ever seen; if it pleases the people, I am satisfied."
