French was among the group of notable female designers and artists in Scotland at the end of the 19th century, later named "The Glasgow Girls," that included Jessie M. King, the MacDonald sisters, and Bessie Young. Like them, she was influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and fellow Scotsman, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, as can be seen in her painstakingly detailed Art Nouveau images.
