Sale 2515 Lot 35
E.M. ASHE (1876-1941) AFTER THE WELCOME HOME - A JOB! Circa 1919.
39x26 inches, 99x66 cm. [Heywood Strasser & Voigt, New York.]
Condition B+: margins trimmed; repaired tear at top edge into image; unobtrusive repaired pin holes in corners.
With the First World War over, American soldiers began returning home (340,000 troops returned in June of 1919 alone); finding employment for them was of utmost importance to the Department of Labor. In this image, a soldier is framed, literally, within a window of opportunity. Against an industrial cityscape and arable fields, the doughboy is removing his uniform in anticipation of all the work waiting for him. Rawls 274, Borkan p. 187.
