      EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)

Provenance: Dr. Charles H. Mandell, Los Angeles; Roger King Gallery of Fine Art, Newport, RI; private collection, New York (1991). Dr. Mandell was a significant collector of early American landscapes in 1983, he donated five Bannister paintings and a Duncanson to the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.

Exhibited: Two Centuries of Black American Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, September 30 - November 21, 1976, (traveled through 1977, to the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Museum of Fine Arts, Dallas, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art), with the LACMA and Brooklyn Museum labels on the frame back; Edward M. Bannister 1928-1901: A Centennial Retrospective, Roger King Gallery, Newport, RI, October 21 - November 30, 2001, and Kenkeleba House, New York, NY, December 12, 2001 - February 9, 2002, with the labels on the frame back.

This large watercolor is one of the finest examples of Edward M. Bannister's works on paper to be offered at auction. The Barbizon composition, with its pastoral setting of a copse of trees and a body of water, is typical of his Rhode Island landscapes of the period.
