EUGÈNE GRASSET (1841-1917) MARQUE GEORGES RICHARD / CYCLES & AUTOMOBILES. Circa 1897.
      42 3/4x58 inches, 108 1/2x147 1/4 cm. Vaugirard G. de Malherbe et Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: small replaced loss at left edge; repaired tears, creases and abrasions in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; foxing and toning in image; ink stamps in lower right image.
Although advertising a bicycle, the product takes a backseat to the other elements in this, in this classic Grasset poster. A pensive woman, with an ornate "knitted, patterned long sleeve jumper" (Arwas p. 37) holds the handlebars in one hand and a four-leaf clover (the company's logo) in the other. The pastel-colored decorative elements resembling an abstract road, sky and stream, surround Grasset's typography. It is a quiet, contemplative design that skillfully integrates Art Nouveau style into the commercial format of a poster. This is the larger format. DFP-II 415, Bicycle Posters 21, Arwas p. 34, Weill 41, Maitres 1900 p. 211, Wember 373, Gold 78, Ailes p. 119, Art Nouveau p. 103, Muller-Brockman 23.
