      HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. A Farewell to Arms. 8vo, publisher's black cloth with gold paper labels, spine faded slightly; endpaper gutters toned, inscription somewhat under-inked; preserved in custom cloth chemise and 1/4 morocco slipcase. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, (1929)

      Estimate $3,500 - 5,000

      first edition, later printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "To Eleanor and Vive la France / Ernest Hemingway / Glamour House / 1939." Glamour House was the name that Hemingway gave the suite at Sun Valley Lodge, where he stayed with his then-girlfriend Martha Gellhorn in the fall of 1939. Includes an unsigned laid-in note maintaining that the recipient of the present copy was Eleanor Young, daughter of railroad man Robert Ralph Young and niece of the painter Georgia O'Keeffe.
