Sale 2515 Lot 68
JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG (1870-1960) JAP . . . YOU'RE NEXT! / WE'LL FINISH THE JOB! 1945.
19 1/2x14 inches, 49 1/2x35 1/2 cm. Recruiting Publicity Bureau, U.S. Army.
Condition A-: minor creases in image and along vertical and horizontal folds; minor abrasions at edges. Paper. Matted and framed.
A "muscular and aggressive," (Paret p. 196) and therefore unusual image of Uncle Sam. Here, our kindly Uncle has taken his jacket off, displaying his star-spangled vest and red striped pants, and is rolling up his sleeve in preparation to fight. Even in this powerful image, the threat is not one of violence, but rather of increased American production, as seen by the wrench in his hand. Flagg p. 85 (var), Paret 277, Rhodes p. 173 (var), Pollack p. 100.
Estimate $800 - 1,200
