Stefanelli (1921-2017) grew up in a large working-class family in South Philadelphia. He entered the Army during World War II and, from 1942 to 1946, worked as an illustrator providing field drawings as a combat artist. After the war, he took a studio on 22nd street in New York and, through his friendship with Franz Kline (see lot 9), was introduced to the "Downtown Group", and began exhibiting in the "Ninth Street Show", a bastion of Abstract Expressionist New York artists on the Lower East Side during the 1950s.
