Sale 2476 Lot 190
KENNETH WHITLEY (1918-1979) CERTAIN PEOPLE OF IMPORTANCE. Circa 1939.
30x19 3/4 inches, 76 1/4x50 1/4 cm.
Condition A- / B+: minor creases, minor losses and time-staining in margins; light staining in image. Silkscreen on card.
Little is known of Whitley outside of the work he did for the Illinois WPA. One of his posters appeared in a 1938 exhibition at the Chicago Art Institute entitled Art for the Public by Chicago Artists. In many ways, this poster is as mysterious as the artist who created it. Most likely it is promoting the 1922 Kathleen Norris novel of the same name, as books were often the subject of WPA posters. WPA 186.
