Sale 2523 Lot 34
(Pistoia 1624-1703 Rome)
The Cup of Sophonisba.
Black and white chalks with gray and white washes on light tan laid paper, squared for transfer in pencil. 247x267 mm; 9 3/4x10 1/2 inches.
Ex-collection Giorgio Franco (Lugt 4194, lower left recto).
Baldi trained in Pistoia, but attracted to Rome by the fame of his fellow provincial Tuscan artist Pietro da Cortona, Cortona welcomed Baldi as an apprentice in Rome. Baldi likely received his first commissions in Rome through Cortona, under whom he became adept at fresco technique. His paintings appear throughout numerous churches in Rome, notably San Giovanni in Laterano and Santi Luca e Martina.
Cortona painted this same subject in one of the lunettes of the Salone di Venere in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence, which Baldi likely knew and emulated in his work.
