Sale 2490 Lot 4
MONOGRAM UNKNOWN CUNARD LINE / EUROPE - AMERICA / [AQUITANIA.] Circa 1920.
38 3/4x24 1/2 inches, 98 1/2x62 1/4 cm. Sir Joseph Causton & Sons Limited, London.
Condition B+: abrasions and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Mounted on paper, with paper mat extending over margins.
One of Cunard's majestic four-funnel ocean liners (most likely the Aquitania), literally sailing off into the sunset on her trip west from Europe to America. Although it is difficult to accurately date this poster, the Midland Railway became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway in 1922. While the artist remains unknown, his ability to lithographically depict a breathtaking, luminous sunset is formidable.
