Young America: The Daguerreotypes of Southworth & Hawes (Steidl/George Eastman House International Museum of Photography, 2005), 464.
A masterwork of early architectural photography by the Boston team hailed as the first great American daguerreian artists. Hawes, a photographer as well as an inventor, crafted a special camera with a holder that facilitated making the lines of the building parallel (rather than sloping inwards). Interestingly, the school is identified by the clock, which was given to the institution by the city's mayor. All of the Bigelow School's pupils were female.
