very elusive unrevised proof with no other copies appearing at auction. Issued in July, preceding the Advance Reading Copy by about a month. Laid in is the publisher's promotional letter (folded), announcing that "This is really an advanced advanced galley [...] The special proofs will be around for August conference." Also the first novel to be published simultaneously in paper in Penguin's Contemporary American Fiction Series and in Viking hardcover.
