      Tempera, ink wash and chalk on illustration board, 1954. 355x445 mm; 14x17 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right.

      Provenance: private collection, Pennsylvania; private collection, London.

      This scarce, early landscape, likely of Brooklyn rooftops, was painted while Williams was a student at the Brooklyn Museum School of Art. There, he studied under Ben Shahn, Gregorio Prestopino and Reuben Tam. After graduating in 1955, Williams won a John Hay Whitney Foundation fellowship to study and paint in Mexico.
