Stamp design published by the Postal Commemorative Society celebrating the meeting of the American and Russian troops at Torgau, Germany, a major step toward ending World War II, created in the 1970s. Vebell (1921- ) is an American illustrator, veteran, and Olympic athlete in fencing who attended the American Academy in Chicago before enlisting. While serving in the Army, he was on the staff of Stars & Stripes magazine, working side by side with Bill Mauldin. His second major appointment was as courtroom artist for the Nuremburg Trials; his illustrations for them, including his haunting portrait of Hermann Göring, can be viewed at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. Over the decades following the war, Vebell designed 16 of these circulated commemorative postage stamps for the U.S. Postal Service, and enjoyed frequent commissions from Reader's Digest, Sports Illustrated, and Time.
