(AFRICAN AMERICANS.) "May the Better Man Win!" postcard, mocking boxer Jack Johnson. Postcard, 3 3/4 x 5 3/4 inches; moderate wear and soiling. Las Vegas, NV, 1912

Additional Details

This postcard promoted the great heavyweight champion's first title defense since his thrilling victory over Jim Jeffries. Another "Great White Hope" named Jim Flynn sought to claim the title. Flynn is here shown in hard training, turning down theatrical offers, while Johnson is depicted in caricature opening a café and gallivanting across Europe as cobwebs gather in his training room. As it turned out, Johnson finished Flynn in nine rounds.
