Additional Details

This painting was done after a well-known 1898 photograph by Frank Rinehart of a Cheyenne named Wolf Robe (circa 1840-1910). Wolf Robe played a role in the 1889 Cherokee Commission which helped form Oklahoma Territory, for which he was awarded the Benjamin Harrison Peace Medal. It can be seen resting on his chest in this painting. The artist was an accomplished amateur named Mabel Marguerite Remington (1890-1958) of Fenton, MI; it is inscribed on the frame verso by her brother Lloyd R. Remington (1892-1991).
