Additional Details

First state, before the addition of the date. These prints were produced in Paris, and the first states are usually found in the French or German editions of the book, rather than the English edition. Bodmer made the original sketches for this print in 1833. The woman, Chan-Chä-Uiá-Teüin, was sketched at Fort Pierre, SD, and was possibly a Crow who had been captured by the Dakotas. The girl was sketched separately at Fort Union, ND. Her name was not recorded, but she was a Blackfeet who had apparently been captured by the Assiniboins. Ruud-Gallagher, pages 109-111.
