first edition. John Morgan won the prize offered by John Sargent in this essay contest, held in the wake of the repeal of the Stamp Act. The prize was given at the 1766 commencement at the University of Pennsylvania. The other essays were by Stephen Watts, Joseph Reed, and future Declaration signer Francis Hopkinson; a eulogium by University of Pennsylvania president William Smith is also included.
