first edition. Originally an English medical student, Falkner converted to Catholicism in Buenos Aires, and spent more than three decades as a Jesuit missionary in Paraguay and Patagonia. The first map features a cartouche illustrated with "the great Cacique Cangapol," discussed on page 26: "I have endeavored to draw his likeness as well as I could by memory. . . . He must have been seven feet and some inches in height; because, on tiptoe, I could not reach to the top of his head." Falkner disputes, however, the existence of a race of giants in Patagonia.
